Conservation

The remnants of natural breckland on Elveden cover some 3500 acres and host some of the finest examples of this unique habitat and all the special flora and fauna found here. Many of the rare plants, Perenial Knawell, Spanish Catchfly and Fingered Speedwell just to name a few, have through evolution miniaturised to be able to withstand the extremes in temperature caused by the exposed low lying land and to survive in the nutrient poor soils. Of the bird species the most notable specialist is the Stone Curlew and Elveden are proud to host over fifty pairs of these very rare summer visitors. Other prominent varieties found on the Estate include, Woodlark and Nightjar.

The importance of the Elveden heaths is recognised by the numerous designations given to them by successive governments and conservation advisors and are all protected by the Wildlife and Countryside Act as Sites of Special Scientific Interest.
